Directed by Jasmine Szympruch & Zivia Berkowitz, Produced by Cheyenne Smith
Raised in suburban New Jersey, far from high peaks, Zivia’s drive to push limits led them from competitive gymnastics into the world of mountaineering. Today, Zivia is working to expand the small collective of Black womxn alpinists exploring the outer edges of their abilities in the mountains. For Black womxn, access to the resources, mentorship, and technical training required for alpinism remains largely confined to Eurocentric, male-dominated spaces.
In response, Zivia invites fellow outdoor educators and mentors-turned-friends, Rosemary Saal and Sof Petros, to pursue an unprecedented independent ascent on Mt. Kenya. By navigating the most complex sections of the climb on their own terms, the team redefines who attempts expeditions of this caliber—and why.
Rooted in both summit ambition and character, ROOTING SOULS follows this journey through themes of place, belonging, and the African diaspora. For Zivia, a Kenyan-American, the expedition becomes a chance to reconnect with and share their cultures across continents. Through rare, self-filmed footage, the film offers intimate access to the lives of Zivia, Sof, and Rosemary, confronting misogynoir while expanding and preserving Black womxn’s presence in mountaineering for future generations.

Shifting Lines is a short, grassroots documentary about the power of pursuing what you’re passionate about and learning to move through fear along the way. Set atop Vail Pass in Colorado’s backcountry, the film follows four athletes as they blend skiing and highlining into a bold, creative adventure. Built from the ground up by a tight-knit team of athletes and filmmakers, the project captures not adrenaline, but meaning, connection, and the elusive feeling of flow. At its core, Shifting Lines is about trusting your team, embracing discomfort, and following the pursuits that make you feel most alive.
